When I meet with potential customers, I find that many of them will have considered shelving, cabinets, overhead racks and hooks, but a new flooring system is not something they’ve typically thought about.
There are a number of reasons why durable garage flooring is key part of a long-lasting garage storage system. Concrete floors are vulnerable to degradation caused by the elements including salt and oil. As a result, concrete floors often become pitted, which is not only unsightly, but generates dust causing the concrete to become more difficult to keep clean and maintain.
Refinishing your floor will protect it from the elements, while at the same time reducing the dust which covers your tools, bikes, garden equipment and other items. Your newly reclaimed garage storage areas become easy to appreciate when you’re reducing the dust that can affect the operation of work and garden tools or that can give your belongings a prematurely aged look. Of course, garage floor coatings or floor tiles look great too!
When we are customizing a flooring system for a homeowner, we have three options available. Two of the options are floor coating, polyaspartic and epoxy while the third is a pvc tile. Making a choice here depends on your need for convenience, floor durability, skid resistance, aesthetic priorities, and budget.
Based on your time requirements, aesthetic needs, and budget, the first option is a floor coating. We highly recommend a polyaspartic floor coating with coloured flakes for texture and interest, as it is most durable, doesn’t fade, peal or crack and usually, it can be installed in just one day.
Polyguard Polyspartic One Day Flooring System
It is similar to the appearance of granite and just as tough while also providing ample grip to make it skid free. We offer a beautiful and wide ranging selection of options and can even customize a specific colour mix for you. It also comes with a ten-year warranty, which provides peace of mind.
We start by testing the floor for moisture content. This is important since if it exceeds 70%, a moisture barrier needs to be applied to assure the floor coating will not lift or peel. Then, we grind the concrete to remove any impediments that are on the surface while at th same time opening up the pores in the concrete to accept the coating. We also repair visible cracks and significantly pitted areas to ensure a more even finish. Finally, we coat the floor, add flakes and seal it. And, this all takes one day to complete.
Please note that in order to prepare a concrete garage floor, the surface has to be grinded using a professional grinder. When done properly, your polyaspartic garage floor coating will continue it’s newly applied look for many years to come with proper cleaning and maintenance.
Epoxy Floor Coating
Like polyaspartic, epoxy is a coating that is applied directly to the concrete floor. The floor preparation is the same, but application from start to finish is three to four days due to the longer cure time required. The price is about one half of the polyaspartic, but it is less durable, offers less skid resistance, and is vulnerable to fading.
Modular Interlocking Floor Tiles
Interlocking floor tiles are a good option if you’re looking for something less permanent or even faster than the Polyaspartic floor coating.
It’s a quick way to give your garage a whole new look using tiles that can be reused. It’s a modular replacement floor system that can transform any existing floor by adding comfort or hiding unsightly stains and minor cracks in concrete floors.
The tiles come in two styles, which are both available in a number of colours and patterns. There is a smooth, matt finish and a ‘Coin’ style which consists of raised medallions.
One of the main benefits of these tiles is that they are quick and easy to install. They don’t require any glue or adhesives, they are resistant to chemicals and easy to customize for an oddly-shaped garage. If one of the tiles gets damaged, it is easily replaced.
Each tile measures 19 5/8″ x 19 5/8″, which is effectively 2.64 sq foot per tile.
For both options, cleaning is quick and easy. You can hose the floor down, power wash, damp mop, machine wash or hand scrub them. Gasoline, salt and other chemicals will come right off.
